If you’re looking to capture the joy of a baby photography first birthday session, I’d love to help you plan a relaxed, meaningful shoot.
The first year of parenthood is incredible, emotional, and of course, a little exhausting. That’s why celebrating your baby’s first birthday with a professional photoshoot is such a beautiful way to mark this milestone.
Turning one is not only a huge moment—it’s also one of the most fun ages to photograph. I bring my portable photography studio right to your home, so we can create relaxed, joyful portraits that truly capture your little one’s personality.
Tips for a Successful First Birthday Photoshoot
The Balloon Shot for Baby Photography First Birthday Sessions
- A classic favourite for a baby photography first birthday session! Many of my clients love using a large statement balloon. Just keep in mind: this setup works best if you have a bit more space—especially for oversized balloons like the one shown below.
- Tip: Choose a matte balloon rather than a shiny one. Matte surfaces photograph better under studio lighting. I also love when a child’s outfit matches the balloon—it brings the whole scene together beautifully!

How to Keep Baby Engaged During First Birthday Photoshoots
- Interaction is absolutely key when photographing one-year-olds. To help your subject feel relaxed and have fun:
- Sing songs, dance, or play simple games during the session.
- Let the child explore the studio space and props—touching and interacting keeps them engaged.

- Encourage parents to come behind the camera to get their attention and bring out natural smiles.
- If you’re working alone (like I usually do), be prepared to get silly! I often balance toys on my head or pop out from behind the camera to keep the little ones entertained.

Maximise Variety in Your Photography
To get the most out of your baby photography first birthday session, try different angles and setups—even within the same outfit. For example, in one of my favourite sessions, I captured a beautiful portrait simply by playing a game of peekaboo.
Some moments happen naturally, so always stay ready. I also recommend:
- Keeping outfit changes to a minimum (ideally no more than two). Most babies don’t enjoy getting changed.
- Varying your shooting angles and compositions to create a wide range of portraits.
- Scheduling the shoot between naps or during a time of day when the baby is usually happiest.
- Staying in regular communication with parents to help everything go smoothly.

Planning the Perfect Baby Photography First Birthday Shoot
Creating the perfect baby photography first birthday session is something I’m truly passionate about. Many of my clients book a full first-year package, which includes:
- A newborn session
- A sitter session (around 6–9 months)
- And finishing with a joyful first birthday photoshoot
Whatever kind of session you’re planning, I’ll help guide you through the process every step of the way. Learn more about my baby milestone photography sessions.
