There is nothing that touches me more than the delicate beautify of a newborn baby and the overwhelming love that the new parents feel towards their new arrival.
Each of my newborn portrait sessions presents me with a unique new person to photograph with their whole life ahead of them, it is hard to find words to describe how I feel about photographing newborns but I’m incredibly glad to be part of the beginning of their journey.
I’m often asked how much space is required for my sessions which all take place in my Clients homes, the answer is ‘as much as is available to me when I arrive’. I’m used to working on location and sometimes that means finding space in the smallest of rooms and adapting my portable studio – you would be amazed at how many of my portraits have been created in a compact space including bedrooms and even hallways!
What is important to me is that the experience for both parents and baby is one that is relaxed, enjoyable and memorable. I will work around the family to make sure that the session runs smoothly and if I’m a photographing a newborn baby extra care is taken to ensure they are safe, warm and content.
At a recent photography session, I was chatting to the new mum whilst she was feeding her baby daughter and she said something that is so true and that I felt when I had my daughter two years ago and that is that the baby stage doesn’t last long enough. Before you know it your little one is crawling and then walking and well then they are toddlers with independent thought!
As a new mother you have been on an incredible journey carrying your first child for nine months and I feel that for the first six months at least after your baby is born the connection is so strong that you still feel you are feeling and experiencing things for them.
This portrait of a beautiful little girl in a knitted ‘pod’ was taken at her newborn photography session in Islington. I think she looks completely serene!
